Nippon Steel Corporation (“Nippon Steel”) and Sumitomo Corporation have entered into a 10-year framework agreement with Shell Global Solutions International B.V. (“Shell”) for the global supply of oil country tubular goods (“OCTG”). A formal signing ceremony was held on October 14 in The Hague, Netherlands.

For over five decades, Nippon Steel and Sumitomo Corporation have been trusted suppliers of seamless OCTG products to Shell’s operating companies across more than 20 countries. This new agreement reflects this long history of collaboration and recognizes the comprehensive capabilities of both companies highlighting Nippon Steel’s consistent delivery of high-quality premium OCTG, alongside Sumitomo Corporation’s robust supply chain management services such as inventory control, maintenance and just-in-time delivery factored in this contracting decision.

This agreement reaffirms the commitment of all parties to ensure a secure and reliable supply of OCTG to support Shell’s global operations. Over the next decade, the partnership will focus on enhancing the value of the offering by expanding the product portfolio, optimizing supply chain efficiency, and leveraging digital technologies to improve traceability and transparency.

Renewal of 10-Year Long-Term Agreement for OCTG Supply with Shell

Nippon Steel Corporation ("Nippon Steel") will participate in OTC (Offshore Technology Conference), scheduled to be held in Houston in the U.S. between May 6 (Mon.) and May 9 (Thur.). 
OTC is an exhibition where offshore-related companies and organizations gather from all around the world. It brings over 1,300 exhibiting companies and welcomes about 30,000 attendees each year. 
At this year's exhibitions, Nippon Steel will feature high-performance products such as high-end OCTG that can be used in high CO2 concentration environments, such as CCS*1, which is expected to be a major step toward achieving carbon neutrality; HYDREXEL™ (HRX19™), a stainless steel product for handling high-pressure hydrogen with advanced resistance to hydrogen embrittlement, which is required for commercial hydrogen stations for the hydrogen economy; and HTUFF™, a thick steel plate with enhanced HAZ toughness*2, which is used for offshore wind power generation equipment mounts and offshore structures. As the need for solutions for climate change increases worldwide, we will introduce our customers to energy-related products that are expected to serve as solutions for promoting decarbonization. 
Taking advantage of this exhibition event, Nippon Steel will broadly contribute to achieving a carbon neutral society in the areas of technological development and product offerings by responding to the needs for decarbonization of energy companies around the world, aiming for the goals of Nippon Steel's "Carbon Neutral Vision 2050."

Carbon dioxide capture and storage technology that collects CO2 emitted from power plants, chemical plants, etc. after isolating it from other gases and then stores and injects it deep underground.

The toughness of parts where the metallographic structure changes due to thermal effects during welding.

Participation in OTC, an Energy-Related Exhibition in the U.S.

Nippon Steel has developed SM-140MS, a proprietary material for Ultra High Strength and Mildly Sour applications. This cutting edge and unprecedented performance was achieved by integrating Nippon Steel lessons learned through its lengthy experience in manufacturing high strength sour service materials combined with stringent control of key manufacturing variables such as chemical composition, melting, rolling and heat treatment.

SM-140MS is a low alloy High Strength Carbon steel OCTG material (Yield Strength ranges from 140ksi to 150ksi), suitable for Mildly Sour Service  applications. SM-140MS is Sulfide Stress Cracking (SSC) resistant suitable for NACE region 1 and part of region 2. Additional SSC Characterization is ongoing to extend its application domain further. As such SM-140MS is the Casing material of choice for Ultra HPHT applications where presence of H2S trace is expected. SM-140MS is manufactured under a stringent quality control in compliance with API 5CT and each heat is SSC tested, as Quality Control, per NACE TM0177 method A, solution B (pH3.5) with 0.01 bar H2S, using an applied stress of 85% SMYS.

Nippon Steel introduces the World First commercially available Mild Sour Ultra High Strength material  SM-140MS for critical HPHT applications !

“NSMAX™-GR-PS,” a special connection for oil well pipes newly developed by Nippon Steel Corporation (hereinafter, “Nippon Steel”), has been adopted for the drilling of new wells, which is planned to be carried out at INPEX Minamiaga Field Office (Agano, Niigata Prefecture) by INPEX Corporation (hereinafter, “INPEX”) and Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (hereinafter, “JOGMEC”), for the first time ever.</h2>

NSMAXTM-GR-PS achieves seamless and high fastening stability thanks to Nippon Steel’s proprietary special connection design. It also ensures sealing performance through managing the fastening position and improves tripping efficiency by enabling quick fastening of connections. We have also conducted testing using actual pipes during the development stage to check the sealing performance.

INPEX and JOGMEC have started joint research for the verification testing of the enhanced oil recovery technology (EOR) using carbon dioxide (CO2) at INPEX Minamiaga Oil Field in April 2021. In this research, it is planned to verify the effect of enhanced recovery of oil remaining under the ground as well as the effect of reducing CO2, a green house gas, by using the CO2 EOR efficiency improvement technology.

For the above verification testing, Nippon Steel received all orders for ERW OCTG and seamless OCTG to be used for two wells that are planned to be newly drilled in 2022. For the ERW OCTG that will be used for Surface Casing*1, in particular, they adopted the NSMAXTM-GR-PS, a special connection newly developed by Nippon Steel, for the first time ever.

Since the move toward decarbonization is rapidly growing in recent years, drilling activities for earth-conscious geothermal power generation and EOR / CCUS*2 are expected to increase globally. We will promote the expansion of the production of the NSMAXTM-GR-PS, which is capable of meeting diversifying needs, looking ahead to capturing international demand.

*1  Surface Casing: Casing that protects the side wall of a shallow-layer.
